Rapid Determination of Cell Viability by Impedance Flow Cytometry

In a collaboration with the University of Basel and the Doppelleu Boxer Brewery, we analyzed insect cell cultures and beer fermentations with our Ampha Z32 Impedance Flow Cytometer. The intriguing results were used to optimize the production processes.

Based on these findings we published an article in the journal “Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology” on the determination of cell status, cell viability and optimal harvest time in eukaryotic cell cultures.

Predicting seed yields is a big challenge for seed producers. A key factor for achieving high seed yields is sufficient pollination with good quality pollen.

The Ampha Z32, a one-of-a-kind high throughput instrument based on the Coulter counter principle, measures pollen cells in label-free fashion. Adapted by all major seed companies, it offers a great tool to analyze pollen viability, number, size, ploidy, and developmental stage. Since previous viability measurements with staining or germination media were quite cumbersome, the current technique offers unique insights in plant and pollen behavior/dynamics thanks to its high throughput capability and quick sample preparation. As one of the top 30 projects participating in the “IPIEC Global Top 30” tour, Amphasys was awarded with the “Project Excellence Award. The top 30 projects were selected in a competitive process from a total of 1285 projects from 10 different countries. We are grateful for the opportunity to participate in this challenging competition and of course more than proud to have received this award.

Strong Interest in Pollen Quality Analysis in Australia

In June the Amphasys sales team visited Australia for a demo tour with our new distribution partner ICT International. The trip started with the installation of an Ampha Z32 at the University of Sydney for use in their wheat breeding program and was followed by visits to Central Queensland University, Rijk Zwaan and University of Queensland. We were very pleased with the good discussions that we had and the overwhelming interest shown in pollen viability applications.

One of the highlights of the trip was attending the ISF World Seed Congress in Brisbane, where we had many interesting discussions on various applications – ranging from how to implement yield forecasting to how to best control the pollen quality through storage and transportation.

We thank all visitors at our booth and of course our strong distribution partners ICT International and Zealquest for their support during the meeting!
